A Descriptive Paragraph on Mathematics

I found the file of an old work of mine – creating a descriptive paragraph – in my computer. My teacher then said that this was a quality writing (he even asked me for a copy) so I thought it would be great to publish this description about mathematics.

The question is: Describe professionally the value of learning a particular field of study. I didn’t get any idea for subjects other than mathematics, so here is what I wrote:

Since the conception of human culture, mathematics has become a necessity for humans to survive – from counting the number of cattle to calculating stock options. Modern science, the human attempt for sustainable existence, depends on mathematical abstractions. Whether scientists are measuring weights, extrapolating demographic statistics, or tweaking electronics, they are describing natural phenomenon in numbers, lines, shapes, and equations. These abstractions greatly simplify their endeavor in drawing whatever scientific conclusions they seek. Thus, this purely theoretical branch of study enhances every other fields of science. Advancements in those fields then bring prosperity and affluence for the society. Therefore, while the value of mathematics is not apparently blatant, it does have substantial significance in the development of other fields and – furthermore – the growth of civilization.

Nice writeup, huh? :)
